Amputations

Published .

An amputation is an injury that results in a limb or part of a limb severed. Bleeding is generally easily controlled due to the fact that arteries tend to clamp themselves off when severed. If the arteries were severed in a way that prevents them from clamping off, bleeding control will be much more challenging. Once the bleeding has been controlled, the next priority is to find the amputated body part. If the ambulance crew can find the body part, they should put it in plastic bag and put in a bowl with water and ice. If the body part has been preserved, re-attachment is possible. The rescuers should never place the body part directly on ice.
